Sunday, September 14, 2003 Montville 14 West
Essex 14
On Sunday Coach DeLuca's 2003 Montville Broncos A Team opened up
their season with a 14-14 tie against arch rival West Essex Cowboys.
This was a game that should have been won, but could have easily
been lost if not for a big defensive stand with under a minute to
play. Trailing 6-0 early, the Broncos rallied back for 2 touchdowns
and a 14-6 halftime lead. Montville's touchdowns were scored by Eric
Toporoff. One on a 60 yd. burst and the second one came on a 40 yd.
screen pass from Tommy Jasterzbski. Toporoff also converted 1 of 2
kicks for 2 points as well. West Essex was able to tie the
game up in the second half with some power running from Sal Tobia.
With the score tied 14-14 in the fourth quarter, Montville did have
their chances to put the game away, only to have 2 drives stall
inside the West Essex 10 yd. line. One on downs and the other with
first and goal as time expired. This week against the Cedar Grove
Panthers, the Broncos will have to do a better job of STOPPING
third and long situations and SCORING inside the Red
Zone!!!!! Good Luck Broncos.
PS: Anytime "The Mystery Sports
Writer" or "Mr. Jingles" wants his old write-up job back, feel free
to take over. You were better at it than I am.

18 Montville 12
The Montville Broncos A
Team lost a heartbreaker today, 18-12 to a very fired up Cedar Grove
Panthers team at Cedar Grove. Hindered by turnovers and (in my
opinion) two bad officiating calls, the Broncos were forced to play
catch up Football all day. Trailing 6-0 at the half, Montville
finally scored in the 3rd quarter on a Donnie Trifari to Marc
Redding TD Pass. The touchdown was set up by the pounding inside
running of Eric Toporoff and an explosive long off tackle run by
Jimmy Del Grosso. Unfortunately Montville failed on the 2pt.
conversion, and the score was tied at 6. Cedar Grove answered right
back to take a 12-6 lead. The Panthers failed on their conversion
attempts as well. Once again by pounding Toporoff inside and another
great run by Del Grosso, the Broncos were knocking at the door. This
time Tommy Jasterzbski was able to sneak it in from the one and tie
it up 12-12. The 2 pt conversion failed again. After
a Montville turnover late in the 4th quarter, Cedar Grove was able
to capitalize and win the game on a last second pass play.
Defensively the Broncos were lead by Matt Maiello, Anthony Chierici,
and Tommy Jasterzbski. It's not time to panic but, the 2
TIME DEFENDING SUPER BOWL and OIL LEAGUE CHAMPIONS need to step it
up, come together and play with some heart and pride. Expect
the same intensity from Fairfield in next weeks home opener.

30 East Hanover 0
Today the Montville Bronco's Varsity A
Team got their first win of the season. It was a 30-0 pounding
against a SURPRISINGLY undermatched East Hanover Hornets team.
Although they didn't score any touchdowns or make any big runs
today, it was the Bronco's offensive line that set the tone. Led by
Kenneth Ventura, David Ge, Josh Smith, Kyle Jacobson, Dean
Eigenmann and Marc Redding, Montville's backs had huge holes to run
through all afternoon. Donnie Trifari only attempted 1 pass the
entire game. Eric Toporoff had a big day scoring 2 touchdowns (one
on a 60+ yd. run ) and converting 3 out of 4 two point kicks. Danny
McClure had some nice runs scoring Montville's 3rd touchdown before
injuring his ankle on the play. Seeing his first action at halfback,
Tommy Jasterzbski ran very strong scoring the Bronco's final
touchdown in the 3rd quarter. Although he didn't get into the end
zone today, Jimmy DelGrosso ran very hard nearly breaking a couple.
Paul Bello and Gregory DeLuca got their first carries of the season
also for positive yardage. Oh yes, there was a defense out there
today as well. With Eric Toporoff, Arnold Picinich, Matt Maiello,
and Johnny Gauweiler having big games, the Broncos defense rose to
the occasion and completely shut down East Hanover's offense.
Anthony Chierici contributed with a fumble recovery and Jimmy Del
Grosso had an interception. Matt Maiello was a terror on
special teams all day. Although it was a great team
win, there is no time to celebrate. A very strong Verona team is
coming to town next week believing they can win. The Broncos will
have to step it up a notch for this one.

26 Verona 8
For the second consecutive week the
Montville Bronco's Varsity A Team made it look easy, trouncing a
very tough Verona Eagles team 26-8. This was by far the most
impressive performance of the season. Once again the offensive
line played outstanding. The Broncos struck early with Eric
Toporoff blasting up the middle for another long touchdown run. In
this game Toporoff was 3 for 3 on extra point attempts, and pinned
Verona deep in their own territory with kick-offs into the end
zone all day. The scoring began when Johnny Gauweiler recorded a
safety pouncing on a Verona back in the end zone. Jimmy
DelGrosso ran very well today, scoring his first touchdown of the
season. By the end of the first quarter Montville led 18-0.
In the second quarter Montville scored again as Donnie Trifari
hooked up with Anthony Chierici on a 50+ yard catch and run pass
play. By halftime the Broncos were in total control 26-0.
Defensively Montville just smothered the Verona offense. Eric
Toporoff had his usual big game hammering Verona ball carriers all
over the field. Johnny Gauweiler and Tommy Jasterzbski had good
defensive games as well. But, for the second week in a row it was
Matt Maiello stepping up making big hits everywhere. Maiello also
had an interception setting up a Montville touchdown. It was a
total team effort with the Broncos dominating both sides of the
ball and special teams. It looks like Coach Deluca's team is
finally running on all cylinders. Keep up the good work Broncos,
no let downs against Caldwell. Remember its a short week.
Gameday is this Saturday in Montville.
Saturday,
October 18, 2003 Montville 14 Caldwell 6
Today the Montville Bronco's Varsity
A Team defeated the Caldwell Chiefs 14-6 on a very cool night in
Montville. The Bronco's touchdowns were scored on a long run by
Eric Toporoff and a quarterback sneak by Donnie Trifari.
Toporoff also converted on 1 two point kick as well. This was a
very ugly performance by Montville filled with mistakes and
missed assignments. Fortunately, good teams can sometimes
win when they don't play their best. The Broncos will have to
play much better next week against the UNDEFEATED
Livingston Lancers. Good Luck Broncos!
Sunday,
October 26, 2003 Montville 26 Livingston 6
Today the Montville Bronco A Team
played their best all around game of the season, shocking the
previously unbeaten Livingston Lancers on their home field
26-6. They did it with tough defense, great special teams
play, and a well balanced offensive attack. Montville struck
early and frequently leading 26-0 at the end of the first
quarter. Eric Toporoff had a big day returning the
opening kickoff 60 yards for a touchdown and intercepting a
pass for a score as well. Bronco running backs ran very
well behind some excellent blocking by the offensive line.
Jimmy DelGrosso and Matt Maiello each scored touchdowns and
both had their best rushing games of the season. Danny McClure
and Paul Bello also had some nice runs today. Defensively the
Broncos controlled the line of scrimmage and totally shut down
Livingston's offense. It wasn't until the closing minutes that
Livingston finally got on the board. For the most part, this
game was over in the first quarter. Montville will need the
same effort this week against arch rival Fairfield Falcons.
For the 8th graders this will be their last regular season
home game as "Broncos". Good Luck, stay focused, and no
let downs!
Sunday,
November 2, 2003 Montville 38 Fairfield 8
Today was the last regular
season home game for our Eighth Grade A Team Broncos. The
boys went out in style with a 38-8 trouncing over arch rival
Fairfield. Over the years, these two teams have played some
memorable games including a "C" Team Super Bowl won by
Montville in 1999. But today belonged to the Broncos.
Montville's touchdowns were scored by Eric Toporoff (2),
Jimmy DelGrosso, Paul Bello, And Gregory DeLuca.
Toporoff also converted on 4 two point conversions as well.
Anthony Chierici and Paul Bello had interceptions for the
Bronco defense. This was Montville's fifth consecutive win
after a very miserable start. Next Sunday will be game 1 of
the playoffs against a very tough Caldwell Chiefs team. The
"A" Team would like to thank all the Moms, Dads, and
Grandparents for their support this season. A special thanks
goes out to Denise Gauweiler (Team Mom), John Gauweiler
(Cameraman), Mr. "Corral" Smith (Team Announcer), Marilyn
McClure (Team Dinner), and all the Dads who helped out with
the chains. We couldn't do it without you. Lastly,
where would this program be without the endless hours of
hard work and dedication put in by Joe and Cindy Chierici?
Thanks for making our kids youth football experience a
memorable one.
PS: Tom, your the best...Where would the team be
without your write-ups? You were right on time every
week and it is great for the boys to be able to have this to
look back on. Thanks for including us in your kudos.
Even though we really appreciate it there is no need to
acknowledge us. We do it because we love the kids not
for the recognition. These boys gave us a lot to smile
about over the last 7 years. We are so proud of all of
them and all of you for your long hard hours of work and
dedication...Joe & Cindy
Sunday,
November 9, 2003 Livingston 3 Montville 0
In a hard fought defensive
struggle that saw both teams play their hearts out, the
Livingston Jr. Lancers STUNNED the
Montville Broncos A Team 3-0 advancing to the 2003 Super
Bowl. Our defense played a great game and gave us a
chance to win. Offensively the Broncos played very hard
and never gave up. We just could not get on
track. You have to give credit to the Livingston coaching
staff. After being hammered 3 weeks ago, they made
adjustments and found a way to shut down the Bronco's high
powered offense. An offense that has averaged 26 points
per game the past 6 weeks. As coaches, players, and
parents we are all disappointed and know we let one slip
away. These boys should not hang their heads. We are all
very proud of this special group of kids
and what they have accomplished over the years.
Their success will carry over as they enter High School.
Best wishes to David Ge for a speedy recovery. As
the Offensive Coordinator no one feels worse. I should
have found a way into the end zone. It wouldn't be fair
not to mention the hard work put in by this coaching
staff. After a rough start we really came together. Head
Coach Paul DeLuca did a great job scouting and having his
team prepared to play each and every week. Sal Mastriani did
an outstanding job with this defense allowing only 31
points in the last 7 games. Alex Martello did a great job
as well assisting on offense, defense, and special teams.
Good Luck in High School guys, and good Luck to the B Team
in the Super Bowl.

Sunday, November 23, 2003 Montville 26
Cedar Grove 22
The Montville Broncos “B” Varsity Team came
prepared for a great game against the Cedar Grove Panthers today,
and that is exactly what they got. It was a game that matched
up two of the best backs in the “B” league. Cedar Grove opened
the game with an interception followed by a 46-yard end around
touchdown run to make the score 8-0 after a two point conversion.
Montville answered back with a 6-yard run capping off a 56-yard
drive. The Bronco defense settled in with two consecutive
interceptions. Then it was time for the offense to go to work.
The Broncos drove for 29 yards finishing the drive with a 7-yard
touchdown run making the score 12–8. After a change of
possession, the Broncos found themselves deep in their own territory
following several illegal motion calls. They decided to take a
safety making the score 12-10 Broncos. Cedar Grove had a quick
45-yard drive finishing with a 22-yard fake reverse touchdown run
making the score at halftime 16-12 Cedar Grove. On their first
drive after the half, Cedar Grove ran for a 54-yard touchdown making
the score 22-12. The Broncos felt the heat and only for the
second time of the season, had their backs against the wall.
The game came down to the battle in the trenches. Montville
drove for 55 yards that ended with a quarterback sneak for their
third touchdown of the day. The score was now 22-20.
After several change of possessions and well into the fourth
quarter, the Broncos battled back with an 18-yard drive capped off
by a 1-yard touchdown run up the middle making the final score
26-22. What a great game and a great season for the Broncos.
Congratulations Boys!!
