Montville Shuts Out Verona
Tuesday, July 30, 2002
In the championship finals of the Suburban League, Montville defeated
Verona at home in a game dominated by pitching. Paul Whitman, our winning
pitcher, struck out 4 and gave up only 1 single and no runs in 3 innings.
Eric Schenk got the save, pitching the last 3 innings, striking out 2,
allowing no runs and no hits. Montville pitching was backed up by
excellent
defensive plays including Dan Sules's line drive catch for the first out
in
the 5th inning and then a quick, accurate throw to first base to assist in
the 2nd out by catching the Verona runner off base.
Like Montville, Verona's pitching was also at it's best
but not good
enough to stop us from scoring the only run we would need to win in the
bottom of the third inning.
With one out in the bottom of the third, Eric Rose, filling in for absent
team members, singled and stole second; Matt Kaiser walked and Paul Bello
reached first on an error. With bases loaded, Paul Whitman hit a towering
sacrifice fly ball caught in RF and brought home Rose for the winning RBI
of
the final game of the season!
Final Score: Montville 1, Verona 0
Congratulations to the team for a wonderful, rewarding,
exciting,
all-time- consuming season. Congratulations to all of the coaches for all
of
your hard work and devotion. And thank you to all of the parents and
supporters of the team for all that you have done to contribute to this
memorable season.
