Matt Zajac hit a homerun in the bottom of the first inning Game 2 played on Monday, June 18 at Montville. Final score: Montville American 9 Glen Ridge 2 James DelGrosso went 4 for 4. Arnold Picinich had two RBI's. Montville pitchers Marc Redding, Kyle Ackerman and Matt Zajac combined for 13 strike outs. Game 1 played on Saturday, June 16 at Livingston. Final score: Montville American 22 Livingston 2 Matt Zajac hit a grand slam in the top of the sixth inning. He had 6 RBI's for the game. Game 4 Sunday 6/24/01 3:00 Home Montville M.E.T. After holding a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning, Montville found themselves behind 4-3 half way through the sixth. Kyle DeNigris lead off with a double and scored the tying run when James DelGrasso followed with his 2 bagger. After a scoreless 7th inning pitcher Matt Otskey struck out the side in the top of the 8th. Montville set the table by loading the bases in the bottom of the 8th. Matt "Z" Zajac drove a two strike pitch over the center field fence for his second "Grand Slam" of the traveling team season. Championship Game Montville 13 Wayne 0 Kyle Ackerman was untouchable. Kyle pitched 4 scoreless innings giving up only 1 hit and recording 3 strike outs. Arnold Picinich started things off by doubling home two runs with two outs in the bottom of the 2nd inning. Later Arnold added another RBI with a sac fly. At 2nd base, Arnold had 5 assists. Michael Kennedy was 2 for 2 with 2 RBI's. Matt Otskey was 2 for 3 with 2 RBI's and 2 runs scored. Matt Zajac went 3 for 3 with a 3 run HR, 4 RBI's and 3 runs scored. Game 13 Monday 7/2/01 6:00 Away Cedar Grove League Game Montville 12 Glen Ridge 1 Phil Benevenga, Marc Redding and Michael Kennedy pitched posting 5, 3 and 1 stikeouts respectively. Michael had 3 assists on the mound. Phil had 3 put outs at 1st base. Matt Zajac hit a 3 run homerun. Matt was 4 for 4 with 5 RBI"s and 3 runs scored. Marc Redding and James DelGrasso both were 3 for 4 on the night. Game 14 Friday 7/6/01 6:00 Away Cedar Grove League game Montville 12 North Caldwell 2 Montville had a 7 run 2nd inning to seal the lead for good. Matt Zajac went 3-4. Matt Otskey was 1-1 and scored 3 times. Andrew Lombardi singled in one run in the 2nd. Michael Kennedy went 2-2 with a RBI triple. He also scored 2 more runs and had 4 put outs at first base. Phil Benevenga had 2 assists in the last inning with Arnold Picinich adding 4 through the game. The pitching was handled easily by Matt Zajac, Matt Otskey and Kyle Ackerman each throwing 2 innings. Matt Z. struck out 3 and Matt O. set down 2. Game 15 Monday 7/9/01 6:00 Away Cedar Grove League game Montville American wins due to forfeit by Montville National. Game 16 Wednesday 7/11/01 6:00 Home Cedar Grove League game Montville 10 Verona 9 Montville pulled out the win in the bottom of the 6th inning after Verona tied the game in the top of the 5th. James Delgrasso singled and went to third base on Matt Zajac's double to right center. Matt Otskey drove in Delgrasso with a line drive single to left field. Kyle Ackerman was 2 for 2 on the night with three runs scored. He also pitched and struck out 2 Verona hitters. The Mustang pitchers struck out 8 for the night. Phil Benevenga was 3 for 3 with a single, double and 3 run Homerun over the left center fence at the Muni Complex. Game 17 Thursday 7/12/01 5:00 Away Cedarv Grove League game Montville 12 Cedar Grove 7 Montville lead the whole game and was able to hold off a Cedar Grove rally. James Delgrasso went 3-4, scored three runs and had one RBI. Michael Kennedy was 2-3 with 2 RBI's and scored 3 runs. The two Matts (Zajac and Otskey) were 4-4 and 3-3 respectively. "Z" scored 3 runs and had 4 RBI's while "O" had 2 RBI's and scored 1 run. Kyle DeNigris added a run scoring single in the top of the 5th inning. Game 18 Friday 7/13/01 7:00 Home Cedar Grove League game Montville 8 East Hanover 7 After coming from behind to tie at 4, the Montville squad fell behind again trailing 7-4 in the 5th inning. The bats came alive and the Mustangs scored 4 runs in the Montville half of the 5th. Michael Kennedy was 3-3 with a single and 2 doubles. Michael also scored 2 runs. Kyle Ackerman was 2-2 and scored a run. Phil Benevenga had a double with a RBI and also scored a run. Arnold Picinich added a run with some heads up base running. Anthony Cheirici was 1-2 and scored the go ahead run. Matt Zajac shut down East Hanover in the top of the 6th inning by throwing just 6 pitchs to get 3 outs. Game 19 Saturday 7/14/01 3:00 Home Cedar Grove League game Montville 10 West Orange 0 This game finished a rain out started earlier in the season. Montville led in the original meeting and added quickly to that lead. Andrew Lombardi singled in a run and scored another. Marc Redding doubled in 2 runs and Matt Zajac went 3-3 with 3 RBI's. Matt Otskey was 2-2 with a walk, 1 RBI and 1 run scored. Game 20 Wednesday 7/18/01 8:00 Home Cedar Grove League game Montville 34 Livingston 2 Montville bats explode. Game 21 Thursday 7/19/01 6:00 Away Cedar Grove League game Montville 3 Lincoln Park 0 Montville was flat this night but managed to shut out Lincoln Park. Anthony Cheirci singled. Marc Redding hit a line drive triple to left field scoring Anthony. Matt Zajac followed with a double to score Marc. The only other run came when Kyle DeNigris walked with bases loaded forcing Phil Benevenga across the plate. Game 22 Postponed from 6/30/01 1:00 Home Cedar Grove League game Montville American wins due to forfeit by Montclair Game 23 Saturday 7/21/01 12:30 at Keansburg State Tournament game - Round 1 Montville 21 Keansburg 1 Montville entered the New Jersey State 11U Tournament on fire and proceeded to score 21 runs in 4 Innings. Matt Zajac, Matt Otskey and Kyle Ackerman combined pitching efforts to limit the Keansberg team to just 1 hit while striking out 6 hitters. Andrew Lombardi provided the big blow with a Homerun to deep centerfield. Andrew went 2-2 with 2 walks. He scored 2 runs and had 3 RBIs on the day. Matt Zajac was 4-5 with 3 RBIs and scored 4 runs. Matt Otskey knocked in 2 runs while going 3-5 and scoring 2 runs. Phil Benevenga had a 3-4 day scoring 2 and knocking 2 runs in Game 24 Sunday 7/22/01 12:00 at Keansburg State Tournament game - Round 2 Montville 11 Branchburg 6 The Montville bats came alive in the 3rd inning pushing across 6 runs. Matt Zajac hit a line drive Homerun to right center while finishing the day 4-4 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBIs. Marc Redding had a productive day going 2-4 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Andrew Lombardi contributed an RBI and scored a run. Andrew was 2-3 on the day. Game 25 Tuesday 7/24/01 6:00 at Keansburg State Tournament game - Round Montville 9 North Edison 8 The Montville 9 fell behind 3-0 in the first inning. Andrew Lombardi came to bat in the bottom of the 2nd inning with the bases loaded and 2 out. Andrew hit an outside fastball over the right field fence for a Grand Slam Homerun to give Montville the lead 4-3. The re-energized Montville team held off two North Edison rallies as the game went on. A North Edison hitter banged a 3 run Homerun in the 5th inning and North Edison added 2 more to tie Montville at 8. Marc Redding led off the bottom of the 6th with a double. Matt Zajac followed with a double and Montville had runners at 2nd and 3rd with one out. Michael Kennedy slammed a fastball to right center field knocking in Marc to score the game winning run. James Delgrasso and Marc Redding both were 3-4. James scored 2 runs and Marc added a RBI. Phil Benevenga was 2-3 with 1 run scored. Matt Zajac had a great day in the field with 3 put outs and 2 assists for double plays. Game 26 Wednesday 7/25/01 6:00 Home Cedar Grove League game - Semi-final playoff Montville 10 East Hanover 9 Montville held off a late game charge by East Hanover with some outstanding outfield play. Anthony Chierchi caught 4 fly balls in centerfield with Kyle Denigris snagging 2. Marc Redding and James Delgrasso also caught 1 each. All Montville hitters hit the ball well with Matt Zajac going 3-3 and Matt Otskey 2-2. Pitching duties were shared by Matt Otskey (3 innings), Kyle Ackerman (1 inning) and Matt Zajac (2 innings). Game 27 Thursday 7/26/01 6:00 at Keansburg State Tournament game - Round 4 Branchburg 5 Montville 3 Montville pitchers held Branchburg to only 4 hits but that was all they needed to hand Montville their first loss of the season. The Montville hitters were only able to get 5 hits one being a 2 run Homerun by Michael Kennedy in the 6th inning. Kyle Denigris had an RBI single early in the game. Matt Zajac was 2-3 on the day. Matt also was involved in 2 double plays. Game 28 Friday 7/27/01 6:00 Home Cedar Grove League game - Championship Game #1 Montville 13 Cedar Grove 4 The Montville bats came alive as the Mustangs scored in every inning with 5 runs in the 3rd alone. Matt Zajac, Kyle Ackerman and Phil Benevenga split the the pitching duties. Andrew Lombardi made an un-assisted double play on a hard ground ball by tagging the base runner at first and stepping on first to double the batter. Andrew was also 2-2 with a double and a RBI. Kyle Ackerman was 1-2 with 2 RBIs. Arnold Picinich was 1-1 with 2 walks and 3 runs scored. James Delgrasso went 2-3 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored and Marc Redding had 2 hits for 4 times up and scored 3 runs. Game 29 Saturday 7/28/01 3:00 Away Cedar Grove League game - Championship Game #2 Montville 18 Cedar Grove 3 Montville came out hitting this game and scored 6 runs in the third inning with 7 more in the 6th. Phil Benevenga did a big chunk of the damage going 3-3 and knocking in 6 runs. Phil also pitched 3 scoreless innings. Matt Otskey also contributed going 3-5 with 3 runs scored and 2 RBIs. Marc Redding was 3-5 and Michael Kennedy went 2-4 with 2 runs scored. MONTVILLE WINS THE CEDAR GROVE LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP WITH AN UNDEFEATED SEASON IN LEAGUE PLAY Game 30 Sunday 7/29/01 3:00 at Keansburg State Tournament game - Final Round Branchburg 6 Montville 3 After a fantastic regular season the game was anti-climatic to say the least. Montville came out in the 1st inning with 3 runs. James Delgrasso led off with a double and scored on Matt Zajac's RBI single. Matt was out at second when Matt Otskey hit into a fielder's choice. Michael Kennedy launched a change up over the left field fence for a 2 run Homerun. Montville held Branchburg for the first 3 innings on a 9 up, 9 down pitching performance by Matt Zajac. Matt struck out the side in the bottom of the 3rd. In the next two innings, Branchburg scored 6 runs on only two hits while Montville committed many un-characteristic errors. Branchburg held on to give the Montville squad their 2nd loss in 30 games. It was a great season anyway; we captured the M.E.T. Championship, the Cal Ripkin District 7 11u Championship, the Cedar Grove League Championship and we finished second in the State Championship. Congratulations to all, players and parents especially.
